Honoring a Franchising Icon

Last month, the franchising world lost a true visionary with the passing of George Cohon at the age of 86. As the founder of McDonald’s Canada, Cohon revolutionized the franchising system, leaving an indelible mark not only in Canada but also in unexpected territories like the Soviet Union. Today, we pay tribute to the extraordinary life of this pioneering figure.

The Journey of a Franchising Pioneer

Originally from the United States, Cohon’s journey into franchising began during his tenure at his father’s law firm in Chicago. A client’s interest in becoming a McDonald’s franchisee sparked his curiosity, leading him to acquire franchise rights for Ontario and lay the foundation for a prosperous enterprise.

Until 1992, Cohon served as the chairman, president, and CEO of McDonald’s Canada, solidifying his position as a leading figure in the Canadian business landscape after becoming a Canadian citizen in 1977.

Ambitious Expansion Ventures

Cohon’s ambition knew no bounds when he ventured into the Russian market. Despite facing logistical hurdles, he persevered, investing heavily in food processing, agriculture, and transportation infrastructure. This not only facilitated the establishment of a successful franchise network but also modernized Russia’s food production landscape.

While McDonald’s maintained a presence in Russia until 2022, geopolitical circumstances prompted the franchise’s withdrawal in response to the country’s actions in Ukraine.

Commitment to Charity and Social Causes

Beyond his business acumen, Cohon was deeply committed to philanthropy and social causes. He founded the Ronald McDonald House Charities Canada, providing crucial support to families of critically ill children by offering local accommodations and financial assistance for medical-related travel.

The impact of Ronald McDonald House Charities Canada has been immeasurable, offering solace and support to countless families during challenging times.

Cohon’s contributions earned him the prestigious Order of Canada in 1988, further solidifying his legacy as a philanthropic leader in the community.

A Lasting Legacy

George Cohon’s legacy transcends the business realm, leaving an enduring impact on communities worldwide. With every visit to McDonald’s or donation to Ronald McDonald House Charities Canada, Cohon’s vision for positive change lives on.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, celebrating the remarkable life of a true franchising luminary.
